Everything You Need to Know About Summer Reading 2020!

This summer Brentwood Library is encouraging youth to do two things...READ and EXPLORE!
Presenting virtual experiences for children ages birth to going into 12th grade.

READ!!
Join our online Summer Challenge to work toward reading and activity goals, earn virtual badges, and earn chances to win gift cards!  Youth from birth to going into 12th grade can log their reading and activity progress using an online tool called Beanstack.  Create an account here, and make sure that you choose Brentwood Library from the list of available challenges.  Parents should make a master account and then add children under that account.

Once on Brentwood Library's Beanstack page, you'll see different tabs.  One presents our reading challenge, where participants will need to read (or be read to) at least an hour each week until August 9th.  Every weekly goal met will earn a chance to win a grand prize--a $50 gift card to the store of your choice!  If you read an hour every week for the full eight weeks, you'll automatically win a $5 gift card.

Another tab presents chances to earn activity badges.  Each badge earned will be rewarded with a chance for the grand prize raffle mentioned above.

Help prevent the "summer slide," a phenomenon where children forget some of the knowledge and skills they gained during the school year, by encouraging children to read and engage in hands on educational activities!  Follow us on Facebook at Brentwood Public Library for helpful ideas and information throughout the summer.

EXPLORE!!
Since precautions due to Covid-19 prohibit us from being together face to face at the library, we are working with some countywide efforts presented by Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA).  They offer a weekly bingo card challenge where completion will earn participants prizes, and they also offer lots of virtual programs and prompts to get outside and explore.  Learn more here.

Miss Barb's Favorite Playdough Recipe

Make this easy playdough recipe which is good for all ages.  Add different colors and create shapes letters, animals or structures! Or add googly eyes to make monsters; press with forks to make fun designs: try out cookie cutter shapes; or make your name.

Playdough Recipe
2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup salt
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 cups lukewarm water
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)
OPTIONAL: FOOD COLORING
INSTRUCTIONS
Stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large pot. Next add the water and oil. If you’re only making one color, stir in the color now.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and begins to form into a ball. Remove from heat and then place inside a bowl, gallon sized bag or onto wax paper.
Allow to cool slightly and then knead until smooth. If you’re adding colors after, divide the dough into balls (for how many colors you want) and then put the dough into the quart sized bags. Start with about 5 drops of color and add more to brighten it. Knead the dough, while inside the bag so it doesn’t stain your hands. Once it’s all mixed together, you’re ready to PLAY.
Store the play dough inside the bags to keep soft. If stored properly it will keep soft for up to 3 months.
